The Benue State Police Command has rescued a one-day-old baby reportedly stolen shortly after birth at a healthcare facility in Gboko Local Government Area of the state.

The command also confirmed the arrest of 11 suspects in connection with the incident.

According to the police, the incident was reported on August 12, 2026, after a man identified as Aondofa Chia informed officers attached to the A Division in Gboko that his wife had recently delivered a baby at a healthcare facility, only for the newborn to go missing.

Following the report, police operatives commenced an investigation into the disappearance.

The initial investigation resulted in the arrest of nine suspects who were taken into custody to assist the police in determining how the baby went missing and identifying those connected to the incident.

The investigation was subsequently extended, leading to the arrest of two additional suspects at about 10 p.m. the same day.

Among those arrested was 35-year-old Mrs Nguhemen Asugh, identified by the police as the alleged principal suspect. The newborn was reportedly recovered from her custody and safely reunited with the mother.

The police said all 11 suspects remain in custody as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the alleged roles of each suspect.

The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the officers involved for their swift response and handling of the case.

He reassured residents that the command would continue to take action against criminal activities and remain committed to protecting lives and property.

The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities or credible information to the nearest police station.
