Afrobeat musician and social commentator Femi Kuti has argued that Nigeria’s judiciary, rather than President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represents a major challenge to the country’s fight against corruption.
Kuti made the remarks while speaking on a recent episode of the Good News Naija podcast, where he discussed the country’s political and institutional challenges.
According to the musician, corruption in Nigeria is not limited to individual politicians but has become deeply rooted in the country’s institutions and leadership structures.
He questioned whether President Tinubu should be regarded as the central problem facing Nigeria, arguing that the judiciary should also be subjected to serious scrutiny over its role in the political process.
Kuti said that if the country had a judicial system made up of people with strong integrity, individuals facing credible corruption allegations would have faced greater scrutiny before being allowed to contest for political office.
“Do you think Tinubu is the problem? The judiciary that didn’t stop him from getting there in the first place is a problem,” he said, while questioning how a candidate facing such allegations could have been permitted to contest.
The Grammy-nominated musician maintained that Nigeria’s challenges are broader than the actions of any single political leader.
He argued that institutional corruption has become entrenched across different sectors, involving people entrusted with leadership responsibilities.
Kuti further stressed that strengthening Nigeria’s institutions, particularly the judiciary, would be essential to addressing corruption and improving accountability in the country.
He maintained that a judicial system staffed by individuals of integrity would be better positioned to scrutinise political candidates and ensure that the electoral process upholds the highest standards of accountability.
The musician’s comments come amid continuing national debate over corruption, governance and the effectiveness of Nigeria’s institutions.
